About

Alabama Hill

Alabama Hill is the kind of neighborhood where you wave to your neighbors and know which house has the best Christmas lights. Built primarily in the 1960s and 70s as Bellingham expanded eastward, it has the comfortable, lived-in feel of a neighborhood that has had time to mature — big trees, established gardens, and streets that kids actually ride bikes on. The views are the headline feature: from the east side you look out over Lake Whatcom; from the west, you get sweeping panoramas of Bellingham Bay, the San Juan Islands, and on clear days, the Canadian Cascades.

Trails and Access

The neighborhood sits at the intersection of several major trail systems, making it a magnet for runners, dog walkers, and families who want nature access without leaving the city. Whatcom Falls Park, right at the southern border, is one of Bellingham’s crown jewels — a huge forested park with waterfalls, swimming holes, and miles of trails. The Railroad Trail connects Alabama Hill to Barkley Village for shopping and restaurants, so while the neighborhood itself is purely residential, amenities are a short walk or bike ride away.

Who Lives Here

The trade-off is that the housing stock is aging and largely homogeneous — if you want a Craftsman bungalow or a modern build, you will not find it here. Prices have climbed with the rest of Bellingham, but Alabama Hill still offers more lot per dollar than the in-town neighborhoods. It is not the “cool” neighborhood, and that is exactly the point for the families and retirees who call it home.
