Barkley

Bellingham's fastest-growing urban village with views, shops, and new energy.

About

Barkley

Barkley is the neighborhood Bellingham is building for its future. What started as 25 acres bought by an aerospace company in 1986 has grown into a 250-acre mixed-use district that the Talbot family has developed across three generations. Barkley Village is the centerpiece — a cluster of shops, restaurants, a cinema, medical offices, and apartments arranged around parking lots and pedestrian walkways. It is not a charming historic downtown; it is a purpose-built suburban village, and it works surprisingly well.

The Residential Side

The residential areas surrounding the Village are a mix of newer subdivisions climbing the hillside, offering the kind of views that make real estate agents grin. The neighborhood is popular with young families and professionals who want newer construction, proximity to shopping, and good schools. Northridge Park on the east edge is a hidden gem — a wild, largely undeveloped stretch of forest with deer, herons, and quiet trails.

Growth and Growing Pains

The major story right now is growth. The city is expected to grant Barkley formal urban village designation, which would unlock plans for 2,500 new housing units, new street connections, and a 40-acre forested park. The trade-offs: it is east of I-5, it lacks the historic character of neighborhoods like Columbia or Fairhaven, and traffic on Sunset Drive can be frustrating.
