Birchwood

Big lots, diverse community, and a rural feel inside city limits.

About

Birchwood

Birchwood is the neighborhood that does not try to be anything it is not. While the south-side neighborhoods compete for “most charming” and Barkley races toward its urban village future, Birchwood quietly does its thing in the northwest corner of the city. The lots are big, the streets are narrow, and the landscaping has had decades to fill in. It genuinely feels rural in places — you might forget you are five minutes from I-5.

History and Community

The neighborhood has a rich and somewhat unusual history. Coal mining operations once dotted the area, and during World War II, residents cultivated victory gardens that left a lasting food-growing culture. Today Birchwood is recognized as one of Bellingham’s most culturally diverse neighborhoods, something the active Birchwood Neighborhood Association celebrates through events like the Birchwood International Market, ice cream socials, and community art projects.

The Trade-Offs

The trade-offs are real: Birchwood is separated from the rest of the city by I-5, which creates a psychological barrier. The commercial options within the neighborhood are limited. But for residents who want space, diversity, affordability, and a strong community association, Birchwood delivers.
