Happy Valley

Students, families, and creek trails between Fairhaven and the university.

About

Happy Valley

Happy Valley is one of those neighborhoods where you can spot a retired couple tending their community garden plot next to a group of college students heading to class. The neighborhood’s proximity to Western Washington University has shaped its character since the late 1960s, when apartment buildings began replacing single-family homes in the northern section. Today the north end is notably denser and livelier, while the southern section retains a quieter, more established residential feel with older homes, big trees, and Padden Creek running through.

Natural Amenities

The natural amenities are exceptional. The 175-acre Sehome Hill Arboretum sits just to the north, offering winding forest trails and a wooden observation tower with panoramic views. Connelly Creek Nature Area provides wetland habitat and walking paths.

The Tradeoff

The tradeoff is the student factor. The northern portion has a higher density of rentals, more turnover, and more noise during the academic year. But for people who enjoy the energy of a mixed-age neighborhood with excellent trail access and easy walks to both Fairhaven and the university, Happy Valley is a genuinely happy place to land. The name, locals will tell you, is earned.
