Irongate
Bellingham's industrial backbone with quiet residential pockets.
About
Irongate
Irongate is not the neighborhood most people picture when they think of Bellingham. It is, first and foremost, an industrial workhorse — the economic engine of the city’s north end, home to manufacturers, warehouses, and distribution centers. Workers commute in daily, and many choose to live in nearby Barkley or King Mountain.
Residential Pockets
But Irongate is not all concrete and loading docks. The residential zones, while limited, offer surprisingly peaceful living. Homes tend to sit on larger lots, prices are more accessible than in Bellingham’s trendier neighborhoods, and public greenspaces along Squalicum Creek provide genuine natural respite. The new Sunset Pond loop trail, which opened in early 2026, has been a significant addition — connecting northern neighborhoods and offering paddling, bird watching, and dog walking in a wetland setting.
The Tradeoff
The tradeoff is obvious: you live next to industry. There is no neighborhood commercial strip with coffeeshops. You will drive to Barkley Village or Bellis Fair for errands. But for people who work in the industrial park or want an affordable foothold in Bellingham with outdoor access, Irongate quietly delivers.
