King Mountain

Bellingham's newest neighborhood -- forested hillside with panoramic views.

About

King Mountain

King Mountain feels like the frontier of Bellingham’s growth. Annexed only in 2009, it is still finding its identity as new subdivisions carve into what was recently forested hillside. The panoramic views from King Mountain itself are genuinely stunning — Bellingham Bay, the San Juan Islands, and the city spread below — and that view is a major draw for homebuyers willing to trade walkability for scenery and elbow room.

Split Personality

The neighborhood has a split personality. Parts feel rural and wooded, with large lots, mature trees, and wildlife. Other sections are being rapidly developed with new-construction single-family homes marketed to families. The community garden that opened in 2024 reflects a neighborhood actively building social infrastructure from scratch. The active King Mountain Neighborhood Association organizes events and advocates for improvements like the new James Street pathway.

The Tradeoff

The tradeoff is walkability — this is a car-dependent, forested neighborhood. New bike and pedestrian infrastructure on James Street is improving connectivity, but you will need a car for daily life. For those who prioritize views, newer housing, and a neighborhood still writing its story, King Mountain has real potential.
