About
Samish
Samish is the neighborhood that feels like it’s not quite in the city. Tucked along Bellingham’s southeastern edge with I-5 forming its western boundary, the area is defined by its wooded lots, rolling terrain, and proximity to Lake Padden Park. The 745-acre park is the main event — locals walk the 2.6-mile loop around the lake year-round, golfers play the municipal 18-hole course, and the swimming beach fills up on summer days.
Housing
The housing reflects the neighborhood’s evolution from rural fringe to desirable residential enclave. You’ll find everything from modest mid-century homes tucked among the trees to newer construction on the higher elevations of Samish Heights, where views stretch across Bellingham Bay to the San Juan Islands. Lot sizes tend to be generous, and the overall density is low.
The Tradeoffs
The main tradeoff is isolation from commercial amenities. There are no walkable shops or restaurants within the neighborhood — residents drive across I-5 for groceries and dining. For families and retirees who want space, quiet, and a park-adjacent lifestyle, Samish is hard to beat. For those who want to walk to a coffee shop, look elsewhere.
