Silver Beach
Bellingham's lakefront neighborhood -- water views, Big Rock Garden, and family roots.
About
Silver Beach
Silver Beach is Bellingham’s lakefront neighborhood, and the lake defines everything about the place. Sitting along the north and northeast shore of Lake Whatcom, it’s the only neighborhood in the city with direct lake frontage, and that proximity drives both the lifestyle and the real estate prices. Waterfront lots here are the most expensive in Whatcom County.
Parks and Gardens
Bloedel Donovan Park is the neighborhood’s gathering place — 20 acres of lake-accessible recreation including a boat launch, swimming beach, playground, and a community building that hosts events and classes. Big Rock Garden, tucked on Sylvan Street, is a quieter gem: a formal landscape of rhododendrons and Japanese maples that hosts an annual outdoor sculpture exhibition.
The Tradeoffs
The tradeoffs are clear: Silver Beach is beautiful but isolated from commercial life. There is no walkable shopping or dining. The neighborhood is also part of the Lake Whatcom watershed, which means development is constrained by water quality regulations — Lake Whatcom is Bellingham’s drinking water source. For families and retirees who prioritize natural beauty and lake access, Silver Beach is one of the most desirable addresses in Bellingham.
