About

South Hill

The Postcard Neighborhood

South Hill is the neighborhood that shows up in every postcard photo of Bellingham — that iconic boardwalk at Boulevard Park with Bellingham Bay stretching toward the San Juan Islands? That is South Hill’s front yard. The neighborhood slopes downhill from roughly 17th Street to the waterfront, meaning many homes get unobstructed water and island views. Height and bulk restrictions protect these sightlines, which is part of why the neighborhood was placed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Housing Stock

The housing stock tells the story of Bellingham’s growth. Below 17th Street you find the oldest homes — ornate Victorians and sturdy Craftsman bungalows on tree-lined streets with sandstone curbs. Farther up the hill, mid-century ranches fill out the Ridgeway area. Alleys provide garage access behind many homes, keeping the streetscape pedestrian-friendly.

The Premium

The tradeoff is price. South Hill commands a premium for those views and that location — proximity to both Fairhaven’s restaurants and downtown’s employment. Families are drawn by Lowell Elementary’s strong reputation, while retirees appreciate the quiet streets and waterfront strolls. It is one of the few Bellingham neighborhoods where you can walk to a world-class sunset every evening.
