Whatcom Falls
Waterfalls, world-class mountain biking, and trails out the back door.
About
Whatcom Falls
Trail Access Is the Whole Point
Whatcom Falls is the neighborhood you choose if your definition of a good life involves lacing up trail shoes or clipping into pedals. The 241-acre Whatcom Falls Park is the anchor — cedar and maple-lined paths cross mossy stone bridges over waterfalls, and the fish hatchery raises rainbow trout from March through December. But the real draw for many residents is Galbraith Mountain: the north entrance on Birch Street provides direct access to over 70 miles of singletrack that draws mountain bikers from across the Pacific Northwest.
Suburban and Quiet
The residential character is suburban and quiet. Closest to Lakeway Drive, the housing is older — modest ranch homes from the mid-20th century. Move south and you find 1990s construction. Because Whatcom Falls is one of the few Bellingham neighborhoods with remaining buildable land, new construction continues to appear.
The Trade-Off
The tradeoff is distance and car dependence. Three miles from downtown with no walkable commercial node. But for families and outdoor enthusiasts who prioritize trail access over urban convenience, Whatcom Falls delivers something rare: a neighborhood where world-class recreation is literally out the back door.
